Akshaya Tritiya : The Golden Day

Akshaya Tritiya = Akshaya + Tritiya
Akshaya is a sanskrit word. It is combination of A+Kshaya. Kshaya means loss or death or destruction and adding A in front of it reverses the meaning. So Akshaya mean something which cannot be killed, lost or destructed or something which will remain for ever.  Hence the benefits of doing any Jap, Yagya, Pitra-Tarpan, Dan-Punya on this day never diminish and remain with the person forever.
Tritiya meaning the third day.
Hindus believe in the theory of "mahurats" or auspicious timings in every step in life. Akshaya Tritiya which is also known as Akha Teej is highly auspicious and holy day for Hindu communities.
The treta yuga began on this day as per the Hindu mythology. Akshaya Tritiya is considered the birth date of Hindu sage Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of the Lord Vishnu and is celebrated as Parasurama Jayanti.

Once a Year :

The importance of Akshaya Tritiya is appreciated when it falls on a Monday. This year akshaya tritiya falls on  13 May 2013 (Monday).

Ram Navami -The most popular festival celebrated all over India

Thousands of years have not made a difference to the love, devotion and respect that is there in the hearts of millions of Hindus for Lord Rama. A popular Hindu festival, Ram Navami is celebrated in order to commemorate the birth of Marayada Purshottam Ram. It is celebrated on the ninth day (Navami) of the Chaitra month of Hindu lunar year in 'Shukla paksha' or waxing moon.

The faithful Hindus believe that on a similar day in the year 5114 BC, the prayers of Dasharatha, the monarch of Ayodha (an ancient city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India) was answered. According to the great epic Ramayana, Dasharatha had three wives named Kaushalya, Sumithra and Kaikeyi. But none of the three bore him a male child which the king needed to preserve his dynasty. At this stage, Rishi Vasistha suggests Dasarath to perform Puthra Kamesti Yagna, through which he can have a desired child. As the result of yagna, Yagneshwar appeared and hands Dasarath a bowl of kheer(a preparation of milk and rice)  and asked him to feed this to his three wives. The king gave one half of the payasam to his elder wife Kausalya, and another half to his younger wife Kaikeyi. Both wives give half of their portions to Sumithra. After few days all the three Queens conceived Dasratha's child. On the ninth day (Navami) of Chaithra Masa (first month in Hindu calendar), at noon Kaushlya gave birth to Lord Sri Ram, Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharath, and Sumithra gave birth to twins, Lakshman and Shatrughan. It was the day of joyous celebrations in Ayodhya.
This day since then is celebrated as an auspicious occasion by the devotees.
